And here we have the two heroines (or at least, one heroine and her sillier sibling) of Christina Rossetti's 'Goblin Market' - Lizzie (the brunette) and Laura (the blonde), continuing the work on my project to contemporise the Victorian 'Children's Poem'.
Laura is the sister who falls for the Goblins' glamour and consumes the fruit, buying it with a lock of her golden curls and sealing both the deal and, were it not for her sister's wits, her fate also. Lizzie is covered in fruit juice and pulpy bits as she's been attacked by the Goblins for attempting to buy fruit for the ailing Laura with mortal coin (they accepted a lock of Laura's golden curls in the first place).
They're surrounded by fairies in this pic as I wanted to add a few more other-worldly fey elements to the illustrations and some nasty naked little bug-girls seemed to fit the bill.
