Stix is one of the small, strange people from the South Westernswamp regions, surviving in a hostile but fertile area,
The swamps are fetid, beyond humid and claustrophobic; thick, overgrown jungle canopy eliminates almost every scrap of sunlight at ground level, and as each plant eventually succumbs it only adds to the nourishing muck it once overshadowed.
Ordinarily this would be a poor habitat for human beings, but in the hundreds of years since the wars, some have adapted - perhaps with some long forgotten genetic help - to life here. These people grow small and stunted, pale skinned and lithe. Their heads look slightly outsized for their bodies, and their eyes are eerily large; they have excellent night vision, and need it to survive. Their skin is waxy and entirely hairless, exuding a natural insect repellant in their sweat. Any small tuft of hair is prized as an aspect of beauty as it is so rare amongst these people.
A rite of passage common to many tribes here is to track and kill a swamp leopard as an advancement to adulthood. Girls and boys around the age of 15 are both expected to accomplish this task. If they survive, they are proclaimed adults and the hide of the swamp leopard is made into a cloak, allowing its wearer to utilise the remarkable camouflage ability of the predator.
